DADU

An adaptable backyard cottage.

Project overview

Intelligent framing, optimized envelope, and a small footprint make this a lean and affordable detached accessory dwelling unit. We designed the DADU around passive solar strategies, utilizing abundant winter solar heating from south-facing glazing.

Concept

High-performance windows allow generous glazing and natural cross-ventilation, while avoiding compromise in envelope resilience. A lower bedroom, bathroom, and support spaces underpin an open upstairs living, cooking, and dining space. An 8:12 roof pitch is ideal solar exposure, yielding an expected 3,544 kWh / year in Seattle, WA.

Site

This DADU design can adapt to any context. It can be partially or fully below grade with a daylight basement. Orientation and glazing can be set based on your site configuration.

Materials

The ADU is wrapped with thick exterior insulation—a PERSIST envelope, which offers unmatched performance in thermal, air, moisture, fire, and pest resistance. The thermal performance of this envelope allows the ADU to easily offset its carbon footprint over time and to operate as a zero-energy structure with active solar energy harvesting.

Build

The structure can be prefabricated and thus allows for minimal site impact and quick erection. Depending on soils and slope, a concrete foundation could be swapped for piers or a concrete-free slab.
